Clay render

Idyllic breakfast scene based on a photograph from Niall Mcdiarmid’s ‚Breakfast‘ series.

Created in blender (rendered in Cycles), composition and color-correction in Photoshop.

The render was done in 3 passes:

Breakfast (No Caustics render)
Breakfast (No Glass render)

1. No caustics. Disabled caustics rendering. Rendered at 102400 Samples with a noise threshold of 0.02 and 128 Light Bounces. Rendertime 15h 46min

2. Caustics mask. Basically a clay render with the glass material and a plane to block out any light that doesn’t pass through the glasses and caustics enabled. Rendered at 102400 Samples with a noise threshold of 0.01 and 128 Light Bounces for just Transmission and Transparency. Rendertime 16h

3. No glass. Same as first but with the glass objects disabled. Rendered at 10240 Samples with a noise threshold of 0.01 and 128 Light Bounces. Rendertime 8h 46min

In Photoshop the 1. pass was used as base layer. The caustics mask was multiplied with the 3. pass and overlayed over the 1. pass. Then I used a curve to change the contrast, shifted colors to yellow and green and added some noise.

final main render

Futurist scene based on a photograph of the suspension railway in Wuppertal, Germany. Everything but the cars and characters is modelled.*

Oldest instance of the original photo I could find was by u/hungryhungoverhippo on July 11th 2020.

Created in blender.

Pixel 5 Teardown Wallpaper

2021-01-21, Photoshop

Wallpaper with Qi coil

Using teardown videos and images of separate components I made these wallpapers of a transparent Google Pixel 5.

One with the Qi coil (inaccurately tucked unter the board for aesthetic reasons) and
one without the coil.

Iburg

2020-10-19, 3D modelling and render, Blender

Wireframe breakdown of the scene

IJburg is a residential neighbourhood in Amsterdam, Netherlands, built on artificial islands which have been raised from the Ijmeer, a lake bordering the IJ (Amsterdam’s waterfront).

Started on July 19th this has been my most complex project, yet. Due largely to my needless detailwork and tangets, some of which I documented and can be found below.

The project folder at the moment of completion had a size of 107GB with 83 folders and 17,358 files. Final .blend file had 4084870 Verts, 4166907 Faces, 7247502 Tris and 9592 Objects.

Reference photograph by George Steinmetz (Instagram), published in his book: THE HUMAN PLANET: Earth at the Dawn of the Anthropocene (Abrams & Chronicle, 2020)

Created in blender 2.82.7. Rendered in Cycles @ 2000 Samples using Intel Denoiser (Render time was 9h35 @ 4000×2667)

An idyllic render of a detail that is invisible in the main render; The railing between two jetties broken away and a bridge created with wooden planks. The planks were simulated as seen in the video.

Coin bottle

2020-04-06, 3D modelling, simulation and render, Blender

A series of renders from what was initially just intended to be a bottle filled with coins as a set piece of a scene. In hindsight I went way overboard with the detail of the coin considering it would not have been visible in it’s intended usage.  Once I concluded the best way to create this would be with a physics simulation that would fill the bottle with individual coins I stumbled into this tangential project.
