Iburg

2020-10-19, 3D modelling and render, Blender

Wireframe breakdown of the scene

IJburg is a residential neighbourhood in Amsterdam, Netherlands, built on artificial islands which have been raised from the Ijmeer, a lake bordering the IJ (Amsterdam’s waterfront).

Started on July 19th this has been my most complex project, yet. Due largely to my needless detailwork and tangets, some of which I documented and can be found below.

The project folder at the moment of completion had a size of 107GB with 83 folders and 17,358 files. Final .blend file had 4084870 Verts, 4166907 Faces, 7247502 Tris and 9592 Objects.

Reference photograph by George Steinmetz (Instagram), published in his book: THE HUMAN PLANET: Earth at the Dawn of the Anthropocene (Abrams & Chronicle, 2020)

Created in blender 2.82.7. Rendered in Cycles @ 2000 Samples using Intel Denoiser (Render time was 9h35 @ 4000×2667)

An idyllic render of a detail that is invisible in the main render; The railing between two jetties broken away and a bridge created with wooden planks. The planks were simulated as seen in the video.
